Current holders of the La Liga title On Friday night, Barcelona will host Sevilla at Estadi Olimpic Lluis Companys, hoping to get back on track with a victory. The hosts are coming into the game after a 2-2 draw with Mallorca on Tuesday, while the visitors, in 12th place, are coming off a 5-1 victory over Almeria.
After winning their previous six games in all competitions, Barcelona faced Javier Aguirre’s Mallorca on Tuesday, but they were only able to salvage a draw. Mallorca took the lead twice on home turf, but goals from Raphinha (in the final minute of the first half) and Fermin Lopez (in the 75th minute) ensured that Barcelona remained undefeated after seven games in the 2023-24 La Liga season.
Third in the league with 17 points, Xavi and company will look to get back on track in La Liga before next week’s Champions League match away to Porto. Despite falling behind 2-0 at home to Celta Vigo last weekend before coming back to win 4-1, Barcelona has done an excellent job adjusting to life at their temporary home stadium, Estadi Olimpic Lluis Companys.
Sevilla have struggled to get going so far this season, but they are on a four-game winning streak in all competitions heading into this matchup. The team led by Jose Luis Mendilibar has won their previous three league matches and moved up to 121st in the standings after not losing since a 2-1 home loss to Girona at the end of August.
With goals from Youssef En-Nesyri, Dodi Lukebakio, Suso, Erik Lamela, and Kike Salas, Sevilla’s 5-1 La Liga thrashing of Almeria on Tuesday was easily their best performance of the season. It’s clear that much can happen in a short amount of time at this point in the season as the Europa League champions are now only three points behind the fifth-placed Atletico Madrid.
Los Nervionenses finished 12th in La Liga last season, their worst place since being demoted in 1999-2000. However, by winning the Europa League, they qualified for the Champions League and will play PSV Eindhoven in their second group stage game next week.
