Game Preview

On Tuesday, Philadelphia will take on the Miami Marlins for Game 1 of their National League Wild Card Series. The Marlins concluded their campaign at 84-78 and claimed the decisive game over the Diamondbacks to secure the 2nd wildcard berth, while the Phillies concluded the campaign at 92-70 and earned the #1 wildcard position.

The Phillies have been an impressive home team this season, winning 47-32 at Citizens Bank Park. Overcoming an early-season slow start and eventually securing the top wild card spot in the National League is testament to their formidable lineup led by Kyle Schwarber, Nick Castellanos, J.T. Realmuto and Alec Bohm – each could hit 25 or more homers this year. Pitching-wise they rely heavily on Zack Wheeler who has gone unbeaten over his last seven starts while holding Miami to just one homer per start this season.

However, this matchup may not be ideal; Wheeler has historically struggled when pitching on the road while Miami has scored runs against him twice this year. Furthermore, Miami boasts an excellent batting average against left-handed pitchers as well as having an outstanding record with RISP this year.

Only for the 4th time in the club’s history are the Miami Marlins currently participating in the postseason. The Marlins franchise won the World Series on its initial two occasions. The Marlins get into the postseason behind a young offense and an underrated but capable pitching staff due to an impressive finish in the final innings. Miami’s first-year coach Skip Schumaker led the team to an 18-9 September record and a playoff place. This comes from a group that has dropped at least 93 matches in all of the past 4 complete campaigns.

These are, in essence, 2 strong pitching staffs, but this season, the Phillies’ offense has been significantly superior. And while the Marlins have performed nearly as poorly on the field, their main shortcoming on defense may not have a significant impact on this series.
