This Wild Card Round series should provide one of the more riveting contests. While it may not feature star power like other series may do, this matchup has the potential for a low-scoring affair thanks to solid pitching from both teams — particularly Milwaukee with their superior bullpen holding opponents scoreless over recent weeks. Meanwhile, Brewers were recently crowned as NL Central champions while Arizona hopes to remain relevant throughout the playoffs.
The Milwaukee Brewers will be taking part in the playoffs once more. The year prior, after their run of 4 consecutive playoff berths came to an end, they bounced back to win the NL Central by 9 matches over the Cubs. They had great pitching the entire year, which helped them to numerous victories, and in the months of August and September, the offense routinely delivered. They have a 49-32 record at home, demonstrating their dominance. In their last 8 home series, the team has won all of them.
Arizona hasn’t been in the playoffs since 2017. Although the Diamondbacks hadn’t been predicted to be a postseason club, they profited from great beginning pitching and had breakout performances from young batters like Corbin Carroll. The team actually dropped its final 4 contests of the regular campaign, but their victory over the Cubs in early September proved to be the deciding factor. Arizona had a 41-40 road record this year.
Arizona and Milwaukee met this season during the regular season, with Arizona winning four of six games by a combined score of 30-19. It will be fascinating to see if Arizona can duplicate that success over this three-game set, although one thing is certain; runs will likely be hard to come by and that should give Milwaukee’s bullpen an opportunity to showcase its strength – particularly with Joel Payamps, Trevor Megill and Hoby Milner back on board as relievers.
