On Thursday night, the Arizona Diamondbacks and the San Diego Padres meet for the first of four games in a divisional series. Zac Gallen, a pitcher with the Diamondbacks, will take the mound today. Rich Hill will pitch for the Padres in response. The Padres had a slim 5-4 edge in the season series.
A short road excursion is in order for Arizona. They just took two out of three games in Colorado, scoring a total of 21 runs, and are the first team in a while to win consecutive series. Despite being only 2.5 games off of a wild card berth, the team’s schedule for the rest of the month is extremely difficult. The D-Backs’ current record is 4-6 over their past ten contests.
The ace for the Diamondbacks, Gallen, has a 3.24 ERA, 1.07 WHIP, 12-5 record, and 155.2 innings worked this season. He has a 2.38 ERA in his three starts this month. Gallen has a 3.34 ERA and a 3-3 record against the Padres in 11 career games, allowing just five runs (four earned) in 19 innings.
Due to their inconsistency, San Diego has been unable to close the gap in the wild card race. They’re still down 5.5 games. After dropping two of three to the Diamondbacks over the weekend, the Padres bounced back with two victories in three home games against the Orioles. The team has a 3-7 record over their last ten contests.
Since joining the Padres, Hill has struggled. In his first career start, he gave up six runs; in his most recent start, against the Diamondbacks, he allowed three runs in 3.1 innings and took the loss. The veteran has struggled to get outs on a consistent basis this season, as evidenced by his 7-12 record, 5.17 an ERA, and 1.51 WHIP in 125.1 innings pitched.
