The New York Yankees will try to bounce back from a 5-2 loss in the opener of a 2-game set against the Pittsburgh Pirates at PNC Park. While the Yankees are holding the best overall record in the whole MLB with 58-23, their offense has been nowhere to be found in their last two matches as they have scored only 2 runs. What is so strange is that the Yankees average 5 runs per game, which is the second most in the MLB, and Aaron Judge leads the home run rankings with 29. There is definitely a huge difference in the offense matchup in this game, and if the Yankees pitcher does a good job, then this should be a clean game for them.
Pittsburgh will try to go for the two-game sweep today, but we can’t deny that it’s going to be one of their hardest challenges in this season so far, though we could’ve said the same thing yesterday. While Jack Suwinski hit his 14th homer yesterday, the Pirates’ offense is No. 28 when it comes to runs per game with 3.7 this 2022 season. Their win yesterday was huge for them, but let’s not forget that they are sitting on a 33-47 record and they have been looking decent only recently, winning 4 out of their last 10.
Today they’ll be sending out Mitch Keller as their starting pitcher, who is making his 14th start of the season and 16th appearance overall. He is carrying a 2-5 record and a 5.14 ERA, which aren’t great looking numbers for the Pirates. Keller is going up against Luis Severino in the pitching matchup, who is having a regular season. Severino holds a 4-3 record with a 3.35 ERA and a 1.05 WHIP, but what makes him so great is that he’s been a fantastic strikeout pitcher throughout his career, and he has a 10.5 K/9 this season.
