After getting swept by the St. Louis Cardinals in a three-game series on the road, the New York Yankees head to T-Mobile Park to open up a set against the Seattle Mariners. Seattle split a doubleheader with the Angels Saturday, winning the opener 2-1 and losing the nightcap by a 7-1 count, then picking up a 6-3 win on Sunday.
New York suffered their 5th straight loss as they were unable to pick up a single win against the St. Louis Cardinals. The Yankees entered Sunday holding a 10.5-game lead on the Blue Jays for the top spot in the American League East and were half a game up on the Astros for home field advantage in the AL playoffs.
Now looking at the Seattle Mariners in the AL wild card picture, they were tied with Tampa Bay for the final two wild card spots in the American League. They were one game ahead of the Orioles to remain on the right side of the cut line. The Mariners enter this game second in the AL West, 11 games behind the Astros for the division lead.
Trying to bounce back from a five-game losing streak, the New York Yankees are sending out Jameson Taillon to the mound. The 30-year-old is holding a 10-2 record with a 3.96 ERA and a 1.16 WHIP over 113.2 innings pitched while striking out 98. In his last start, which was against the Mariners, he threw 4.2 innings, allowing six runs on two hits with four walks and six strikeouts in a game the Yankees lost 8-6.
The Seattle Marines reply back with Logan Gilbert, who is making his 23rd start of the split. Gilbert is carrying a 10-4 record with a 3.09 ERA and a 1.18 WHIP over 128.1 innings pitched while striking out 120. He threw 5.1 innings, allowing six runs on seven hits with four walks and two strikeouts in a game the Mariners won 8-6 over the Yankees.
