Yesterday the Dodgers took an unexpected loss against the Phillies at the Dodger Stadium, but that might not be the worst thing that happens for the Dodgers this week. After having a very good start in his 15th MLB season, Clayton Kershaw was placed on the Dodgers’ injured list with right SI joint inflammation. We still don’t know when Kershaw will be able to make a comeback, but it seems it won’t be any time soon.
In his place, Walker Buehler will start the game for the Dodgers. Buehler’s stats aren’t close to being bad, but if we compare him to Kershaw then it’s safe to say that the Dodgers are in a tough position. He has a 1.96 ERA and 1.06 WHIP, while Kershaw scored 1.80 and 0.73 respectively, which is a big difference.
Hopefully, for them, this doesn’t mean a definitive loss for the Dodgers as the Astros are just 1 win away from taking over them in the standings. But looking at how things went yesterday, the Phillies might be able to take a huge advantage from the Dodgers’ situation. We saw Camargo and Harper demolish the Dodgers’ defense as they scored 6 RBI altogether.
The Dodgers did make a good effort at coming back into the game as they got 6 runs throughout the 6th to 8th innings, but it wasn’t enough. Daniel Hudson messed up one of his pitches that allowed the Phillies to take the lead once again. If the Dodgers want to have a shot at winning this game then they cannot let the Phillies get such a huge early lead.
Now, the Phillies will start with Kyle Gibson on the mound, and that might give the Dodgers a little bit of room to breathe early on in the game. Gibson has a decent 2.94 ERA, but he is sitting at29 strikeouts over 33.2 IP, which is quite low compared to other Phillies pitchers like Nola or Wheeler.
The Dodgers find themselves in a very unfortunate situation, but they have to try to make the best out of it against the Phillies. If they lose this game they might start falling behind in the standings, although they still have a chance to tie the series if they win on Saturday and Sunday.
