The Arizona Diamondbacks recently bombed out against the National League West’s top-ranked Los Angeles Dodgers, losing three games in a row. Arizona hopes to get back on track with a better performance in the series opener on Friday night against the American League East-leading Baltimore Orioles.
The Diamondbacks were swept by the Los Angeles Dodgers, losing all three games by a combined score of 23-5. The fact that Arizona had won 10 consecutive games before the series only makes matters worse.
In terms of the National League wild card, Arizona is in an excellent position to begin September. There are a number of teams fighting for a position in the playoffs, including the Philadelphia Phillies, Chicago Cubs, Arizona Diamondbacks, San Francisco Giants, Cincinnati Reds, and Miami Marlins.
The host team has six consecutive games starting on Friday. Additionally, the Diamondbacks have a three-game set against the National League’s poorest team, the Colorado Rockies. After a strong 6-3 homestand, Baltimore now leads the Tampa Bay Rays by 1 1/2 games.
Only a catastrophic collapse might keep the Orioles from making the playoffs for the first time since 2016. The 18 wins and 9 losses for Baltimore in August were followed by a nine-game road trip. The first three games of the Orioles’ road trip will be played against the Los Angeles Angels, and the final three will be played against the Boston Red Sox.
The Orioles swept the first two games of their three-game set with the White Sox in Chicago by a total score of 18-3. Wednesday’s 10-5 loss was the Orioles’ season finale.
Left-hander Cole Irvin will start the opener for the Orioles against right-hander Zach Davies of the Diamondbacks. This will be Irvin’s 12th start of the year at age 29. On August 25 against the Rockies, he allowed four runs on six hits over six innings and was given a no-decision.ys.
Davies, 30 years old, is making his second start after being sidelined for five weeks and a half with a back ailment. On Saturday against the Cincinnati Reds, he allowed one run on five hits over five innings and received no decision.
