Game Preview

On Friday, the Tampa Bay Rays and the Cleveland Guardians kick up a three-game series at Cleveland. The Rays hope to carry their hot streak into the new month.

The Rays beat the Miami Marlins 3-0 in 10 innings on Wednesday, their fourth consecutive victory and eighth in their past nine games. The Rays (82-52) are currently 30 games above.500 and are only 1 1/2 games behind the 83-50 Baltimore Orioles, who are first in the AL East.

For the third year in a row, Randy Arozarena has hit 20 home runs and stolen 20 bases thanks to his two-run single in the 10th inning and two-base steals.

During his current four-game hitting streak, Arozarena has hit a home run, driven in four runs, and scored six runs. He had 22 of 25 August games in which he got on base, including all three games versus the Guardians. On August 11-13, he helped Tampa Bay win two of three games against Cleveland by going 3-for-12 with two doubles, two RBIs, and three runs.

In the series opener, Tyler Glasnow will take the mound for the Rays versus Cal Quantrill for the Guardians. After being sidelined by a sore shoulder, Quantrill is set to come off the 15-day disabled list and start.

On Saturday, Glasnow, 30, bounced back from a subpar showing by winning big and moving to 5-1 in his last seven starts. Glasnow’s lifetime record versus the Guardians is 0-2 with a 2.12 ERA in three starts.

Glasnow took a no-hitter into the sixth inning against the New York Yankees on August 19 after allowing seven runs (five earned) in a loss to the Los Angeles Angels on the previous day. After allowing a single to DJ LeMahieu with one out in the sixth inning, he left the game. This was his eighth straight start in which he threw at least six innings, which was a career high.

The Guardians have won two straight games and four of their previous six heading into this weekend’s series. The Guardians’ three-run triumph on Wednesday came in extra innings, just like the Rays’. Cleveland closed the gap to five games on the AL Central-leading Minnesota thanks to a three-run homer by Kole Calhoun in the bottom of the 10th inning.
