The Miami Marlins need a strong series to get back on track. On Friday night, the Miami Marlins will visit the Milwaukee Brewers for the first game of a three-game series. Both teams are currently in the hunt for a National League wild-card playoff spot.
The Marlins were off on Thursday but still managed to sweep the Braves despite playing poorly throughout the series. The Brewers outscored the Marlins 19-5 in winning three of four games in the series.
Schumaker anticipates the return of two key players from injury on Friday. Luis Arraez, the major league batting leader at second base with a .354 average, has been sidelined for the past two games with an injured left ankle. Despite setting career highs with 27 doubles, 33 homers, 76 RBIs, and 69 runs this season, third baseman Jake Burger left Wednesday’s defeat to the Mets with right quad soreness.
There has been no word on who will start for the Marlins on Friday, but right-hander Bryan Hoeing is a possibility. The Hurricanes’ 11-5 victory over the Braves on Saturday marked the beginning of hoeing. After conceding three runs in four and a third innings, he was given no decision.
Hoeing has faced Milwaukee twice in his career, both times as relief, and both times he has thrown 1 2/3 innings without allowing a run. In eight career starts, Hoeing has an earned run average of 7.96. He has a 3.78 ERA in 31 career bullpen appearances.
Meanwhile, the Brewers are getting closer to clinching the NL Central with a 6-0 win over the St. Louis Cardinals on Thursday. The Brewers are playoff-bound after winning 22 of their last 31 games.
Right-hander and three-time All-Star Corbin Burnes will get the start for the Brewers on Friday as they try to win their third division title in six years. Burnes, at 28 years old, was picked by Milwaukee in the fourth round in 2016.
In 2021, when his 2.43 earned run average was the lowest in the league, he was awarded the Cy Young. Last year, he led the National League in strikeouts with 243, and he’s one victory away from tying a career high in victories (three in a row).
