The Philadelphia Phillies will play the Miami Marlins for the sequel in their best-of-3 NL Wild Card set on Wednesday afternoon, and with a victory, they will advance to their 2nd consecutive Division Series. Zack Wheeler delivered an outstanding showing in Game 1. Braxton Garrett will pitch for Miami, and the Phillies hope to rebound from a dismal regular season with Aaron Nola.
The tune didn’t change for the Marlins during their 4-1 defeat on Tuesday. Throughout the whole game, they struck the ball on the ground, but while managing 7 hits, their offense lacked any real power. Miami had the highest percentage of ground balls in the major leagues this season at 65.2% of the total balls in play. With men in position to score, it was a respectable 2-for-7, further demonstrating how far all of these ground balls travel.
The Marlins’ most reliable option this year has been Braxton Garrett, who has started 30 games and has a 3.66 ERA. His exit velocity and anticipated batting average were among the lowest in baseball, but he compensated for it with a strong 49% ground-ball rate that places him in the upper twenty percent of all pitchers. His ability to limit walks over the past 2 campaigns has also been outstanding, and his 23.7% strikeout percentage isn’t bad for a pitcher who plays to contact.
Zack Wheeler’s dominance in the opening match on Tuesday seems rather evident, but it’s impossible to predict what Aaron Nola will do in Game 2.
Last year, the experienced right hander started the playoffs with 12 innings without allowing a run over the Cardinals and Braves until giving up 14 earned runs over his last 3 outings. He will occasionally have performances that make him appear to be a top-5 pitcher, but he will then go on a run of poor performances.
