The Mets have momentum coming into this game after sweeping the weekend series against the Cardinals. They’ve been on a roll as of late, as well, with six wins in their last eight games. However, the Mets’ season has not gone according to plan.
Since they are already mathematically eliminated from playoff contention, they sold off many of their best players before the trade deadline. The Mets are 58-67 on the year, 23 games out of first place in their division, and 7 games away of a Wild Card berth.
The Mets’ offense needs to perform like it has in the last five games if they are to win. The Mets have scored 35 runs and won four of their previous five games. They rank 19th in slugging percentage and 17th in runs scored despite having the 25th best batting average and the 18th best on-base percentage.
The Mets will send David Peterson on the mound today. His ERA this year is 5.45, and his record is 3-7. In general, he avoids getting too far into beginnings. He has gone three starts without completing four innings. However, in 10.1 innings of work, he has allowed only three runs while striking out eleven.
The Braves, meanwhile, have baseball’s best record. They have improved to 80-43 on the year, giving them a division lead of 13.5 games. The Braves won two of three against the Giants, but yesterday’s loss came as a result of Max Fried’s continued struggles. Even so, in their last ten games they are 8-2, with wins over the Yankees and the Mets.
The Braves have the strongest offense in MLB. When it comes to hitting, they lead the league in every major category. Matt Olson has been a major contributor to their success. He has 43 home runs and 108 RBIs, both major league bests.
Today marks Allan Winans‘ third career start in the major leagues. He is 2-0 with a 1.59 ERA in his first two starts. His previous performance was spectacular. In seven innings of work, he allowed just four hits while striking out nine. That was against the Mets, and because they were unable to score against him, the Braves ended up winning by a score of 21-3.
