So far in August, the Dodgers have been the best team in the MLB. The Dodgers have won 17 of their last 19 games this month and they have a 12-game lead in the National League West. The only uncertainty is whether or not they will be the number one seed in the playoffs after easily winning the NL West. There is still time for the Dodgers to catch up to the Atlanta Braves and secure the one seed in the playoffs. Los Angeles has been dominant this month, winning all six of their matchups.
The Dodgers have benefited greatly from the rookie pitcher Bobby Miller. His ERA is 3.70, his WHIP is 1.17, and his opponents are hitting .231 against him. His three starts this month have surpassed even his high standards. Miller has a 1.15 ERA, 11 strikeouts, and 11 hits allowed in 15 2/3 innings over three August starts.
Miller’s road performance has been even more impressive this year. Seven of his starts have been both away and at home, making it easy to evaluate his performance in both settings. Miller’s road ERA is 2.19, he’s allowed just one home run, and batters are hitting .227 against him. Miller should be able to have another strong away start due to the offensive troubles of the Guardians this season.
The Guardians trail the Cleveland Indians by six games in the AL Central. Despite their poor record, they are still mathematically capable of winning their division and therefore qualifying for the postseason. The last two games for the Guardians have been losses, and six of their last ten overall. However, the month of August has not improved their odds as they are 6-12 this month.
Noah Syndergaard has had two strong starts and two bad starts since being traded. More importantly, the Houston Astros and the Toronto Blue Jays, two really excellent teams, were the opponents in his two good starts. To make things more interesting he is playing his previous squad. Syndergaard’s two home starts for the Guardians have been slightly more successful than his road outings.
