Game Preview

When they resume their three-game set with the host Chicago White Sox on Tuesday, the Seattle Mariners will be riding a seven-game winning streak in which they have scored at least 10 runs on three separate occasions. On Monday in game one of the series, Seattle defeated the White Sox 14-2 behind a season-high offensive performance from Cal Raleigh (3-for-5, six RBIs).

The Mariners now have a one-game lead over the Toronto Blue Jays for the third and final American League wild-card slot thanks to home runs from Teoscar Hernandez and Dominic Canzone. And that was accomplished without the help of AL Player of the Week Julio Rodriguez, who took the day off.

The Cubs dropped to 0-7 after another defeat. The White Sox, who will be without shortstop Tim Anderson again on Tuesday, were led by Elvis Andrus and Andrew Benintendi, who each had two hits. Anderson’s Aug. 5 altercation with Cleveland Guardians player Jose Ramirez resulted in a five-game suspension for him.

Right-hander Mike Clevinger will lead Chicago’s effort to tie the series. Clevinger is coming off his best start of the season. Last Wednesday, Clevinger faced the Chicago Cubs at home and pitched seven scoreless innings, allowing just three hits and two walks while striking out seven. Clevinger went 2-1 with a 1.57 ERA in four starts after returning from the disabled list after missing nearly six weeks with right biceps irritation.

Rookie Bryan Woo is coming off the disabled list for Seattle. He has been dealing with forearm soreness. Woo hasn’t made an appearance on the mound since August 3, when he went six innings against the Los Angeles Angels and received no decision after allowing two runs on four hits, walking two, and striking out six. On June 16, Woo made his lone career start against the White Sox, surrendering two runs on three hits over five and a third innings while receiving no decision.
