Game Preview

Well, the series opener between the Cincinnati Reds and Los Angeles Angels was moved to Tuesday night after a 14th rainout in the stadium’s history (which dates back to 1966). Tarps? Who knew Anaheim even had such a thing? Anyway, these teams haven’t faced off since 2019, so this fight is long overdue. The fascinating talent in both benches should ensure that the anticipation is well worth it.

A Cincinnati surge was prompted by the promotion of several young players to the majors. The Reds seemed unstoppable this summer and were cruising toward a postseason berth. The month of August came and went, and now this squad is 5-12 and one game out of a playoff berth. Pitching has been a problem all season, but this may be the worst month for the team thus far.

To try and remedy that, Graham Ashcraft will receive the nod today. Since June 30th, spanning nine starts, he has been outstanding, posting a 2.17 ERA in that time. Nonetheless, the Reds have lost all three of his starts recently. With the way Ashcraft has been pitching, a victory should be within reach for Cincinnati.

After a lackluster showing in a home series over the weekend, the offense must step up. The Reds’ speed has helped them rank 10th in the league in runs scored per game. Cincinnati is seventh in on-base percentage and has the most stolen bases of any team. They rank 24th in strikeout rate, which is problematic given that making contact usually results in positive outcomes.

By all appearances, Los Angeles has been fighting for a playoff spot as of the trade deadline. A glance at the standings dispels that illusion, showing that the team is currently more than 10 games behind the eighth and last wild-card place. The Angels’ bullpen and starting rotation have been their Achilles’ heel this season.

The White Sox’s acquisition of Lucas Giolito was supposed to assist, but through four starts, he has done the opposite. His 21.0 innings of work for the squad have resulted in 24 hits and 19 runs allowed. Los Angeles has a losing record of 1-3 in those games. Maybe Tuesday will be the night things turn around for them.
