The Cubs beat the Tigers in a nail-biter in the bottom of the ninth yesterday. Although, the Cubs did start out on top. A Spencer Torkelson error and a Nick Madrigal double helped them score three runs in the top of the second inning. A solo home run by Sieya Suzuki in the fourth inning put the score at 4-0.
Still, the Tigers made an effort to win the game. In the bottom of the sixth, the lead was trimmed in half when Spencer Torkelson and Kerry Carpenter hit back-to-back home runs. The Dodgers took the lead in the top of the eighth when Cody Bellinger hit an RBI double, but the Tigers responded in the bottom of the inning with a run thanks to a Javier Baez double and a Zack McKinstry single.
Nick Madrigal doubled in a run and later scored on a fielder’s choice by Ian Happ in the top of the ninth. Tigers’ Matt Vierling scored a run, but it wasn’t enough, and the Cubs went on to win their third straight. There is a remote possibility of the Tigers making the postseason. With an eight-game deficit to the Twins, their postseason odds are estimated to be 0.7%.
Today, Drew Smyly will take the mound for the Cubs. His last three appearances have all been in relief, and he has not allowed a run in any of those appearances. After two rather disappointing starts, the decision was made to make this change. Over the course of his two starts, he threw 9.2 innings and allowed 12 runs (five homers).
Today, Reese Olson will take the mound for the Tigers. He now has a 4.83 ERA and a 2-5 record. Olson’s star chart has been all over the place lately. He allowed four runs in five innings in his first start of the month. The next time out, he only allowed four runs in 2.2 innings after allowing two hits and no runs in the previous outing. The Tigers’ chances of winning depend on Olson having a good first inning.
