The Los Angeles Dodgers and Colorado Rockies, who have been headed in opposing directions all season, each have five games left. The Rockies have now lost 100 games for the first time in franchise history, while the Dodgers are still in with a chance of achieving their third consecutive 100-win season.
Colorado will send right-hander Noah Davis to the mound against Los Angeles right-hander Emmet Sheehan on Wednesday night in Denver in the third game of a four-game series.
On Tuesday, Colorado won the first game of the doubleheader 4-1, while Los Angeles won the second game, 11-2.
The Dodgers had a 9-2 record versus the Rockies this year, but they lost Tuesday’s opener to end a five-game winning streak. Sheehan, a rookie like Tuesday’s winning pitcher, Bobby Miller, who went seven good innings, will take the mound against the Rockies again this year.
On June 29 at Denver, Sheehan made his lone start against them, going five innings and allowing three runs on seven hits while striking out five.
Davis’s first major league game was on October 5, 2022, and it was against the Los Angeles Dodgers. In the season-ending game last year, Davis let up two runs in an inning of relief.
As the National League playoffs go, the Dodgers may still have a shot at the top slot, but the Atlanta Braves (101-56) remain in command.
In the nightcap on Tuesday, Freeman hit his 58th double by barely beating the throw to second from Nolan Jones in left. Jones’s outfield throw was unsuccessful. Jones and Rockies center fielder Brenton Doyle have made it a practice to use their powerful arms to throw out runners attempting to advance to second or third base.
Since being called up from Triple-A Albuquerque in late May, Jones has recorded 18 outfield assists. Infield assists account for 50% of his total.
