Coming from behind, the Reds defeated the Mariners 7-6. Now, they need to win the series against the M’s if they want to keep their NL wild card hopes alive. Teoscar Hernandez got things going for the Mariners with a two-run home drive to deep center field.
In the fifth inning, with the score at 2-1 Mariners, Julio Rodriguez hit a monster bomb to right field, scoring three runs and extending Seattle’s lead to 5-1. Christian Encarnacion-Strand’s line drive to deep left in the sixth inning cut the Reds’ deficit to 5 runs. Noelvi Marte then tied the game with a hit to left field.
Rodriguez, though, responded for the Mariners by launching his second home run of the game to right field, cutting the lead to 6-3. In the bottom of the eighth inning, with two men on base, the Reds decided to use a pinch hitter. Then, with the score knotted, Nick Martini hit a three-run home run to right field. In the ninth inning, the Reds were clinging to a slim lead when Encarnacion-Strand delivered the game-winning hit with a walk-off single.
In five innings of work, Bryce Miller allowed just one earned run on seven hits for the Mariners. The bullpen was terrible, as they gave up six runs in the last four innings and lost the game. Under the pressure, the bullpen gave way. They need to get well soon. The Seattle Mariners need Gilbert to have another strong outing and are counting on some help from their offense to make that happen.
Logan Gilbert has a 12–5 record and a 3.56 ERA heading into this start. In his most recent outing, he lasted 6 2/3 innings, allowed just one run on seven hits, and had nine strikeouts. Five times in his last six starts, Gilbert has gotten out to a good start. In contrast, Lyon Richardson has an ERA of 6.75 and a 0-1 record. In his previous start, he went 4 2/3 innings, allowing two earned runs on two hits with four strikeouts and five walks.
