The Washington Nationals appear to be a team with aspirations of improvement. They will try to tie the four-game series with the visiting Pittsburgh Pirates on Tuesday night if they play like they did in the series opener on Monday, led by shortstop CJ Abrams.
On Monday, Abrams hit two home runs as the leadoff hitter for Washington, and Dominic Smith hit one from first base as the Nationals beat the Pirates 6-2. Abrams went 2-for-4 with a home run and a solo shot on Monday after sitting out Sunday’s game with a knee injury.
Abrams, 22, in his first complete major league season, is batting.336 with six doubles, two triples, eleven home runs, twenty-three RBIs, twenty-eight stolen bases, and thirty-nine runs scored since he was promoted to the leadoff spot on July 7.
Washington, which had a dismal 3-10 record coming into the series, suddenly finds themselves trailing the Pirates (66-78) by one game. After going 8-2, Pittsburgh has now dropped three straight games. The Nationals have a 3-1 record versus the Pirates this year.
On Tuesday, right-hander Joan Adon (2-1, 5.56 ERA) for Washington will take the mound against the left-hander Bailey Falter (1-8, 4.65) for Pittsburgh.
Adon, who was called up for the second time this season on August 5th, had just come off a no-decision against the New York Mets. He went five innings while allowing two runs on six hits. He issued a season-high three walks while coming within one strikeout of matching his season best in strikeouts.
On April 14 of last year, his only career start against the Pirates resulted in a loss when he surrendered six runs on nine hits over four and a third innings.
Bailey is 1-1 with a 4.02 ERA, 26 strikeouts, and 8 walks in 31 1/3 innings pitched after being traded to the Pirates from the Phillies at the trade deadline. He has appeared in seven games, four of which were starts.
