This Saturday at noon, Rynearson Stadium will play host to a non-conference football game between Eastern Michigan University and the University of Massachusetts.
The University of Minnesota beat the Eagles by a score of 25-6 on the road on September 9. The Minutemen were unable to overcome Miami University in their home stadium of McGuirk Alumni Stadium after enduring a nearly six-hour cumulative weather delay.
The Eagles defeated the Minutemen 20-13 on October 1 of last season in Ypsilanti. Former quarterback Gino Campiotti ran for 118 yards and scored twice, and he also completed 8 of 18 passes for 87 yards. The remaining points for the Minutemen came from field goals by Carson Cameron, who was two for two. One of his kicks was a career long 47 yards.
In the first half, the defense for Massachusetts kept Eastern Michigan scoreless. There were a total of nine tackles made (six by Gerell Johnson, four by Jalen Mackie, and four by Tyler Rudolph), including an interception for Mackie and another for Rudolph.
The teams also competed against one another in 2014, 2015, and 2022. At McGuirk Alumni Stadium, Eastern Michigan beat Western Michigan 42–28 on September 18, 2022. In that game, Brady Olson threw for 288 yards and two touchdowns, and Ellis Merriweather rushed for 100 yards for the first time in his professional career. On 23 attempts, Merriweather gained 142 yards rushing.
The two teams last met at Ypsilanti, Michigan on November 14, 2015, a game that Massachusetts won 28-17. UMass gained 330 total yards on the ground, including 200 in the opening half, in their victory. UMass’s first touchdown of the day was scored by Marquis Young, who rushed for a game-high 168 yards on 32 carries.
On October 18, 2014, at Gillette Stadium in Foxboro, Massachusetts, the Minutemen defeated the Patriots by a score of 36-14 in the series’ inaugural matchup. Shadrach Abrokwah set a new personal best with 135 yards rushing and four scores. The Minutemen ended with 562 yards of offense while also recording four sacks
