The current losing streak of the New York Yankees is the longest in almost four decades. If they lose one more game, they will be back where they were when they moved to the Bronx. The Yankees haven’t won a game since August 11; they play the Washington Nationals on Wednesday night as they try to snap a nine-game losing streak.
New York has been outscored 53-21 during that span, falling from four games to five games below .500. Ben Rortvedt homered and had two of the Yankees’ two hits in Tuesday’s 2-1 loss to Washington.
The Yankees haven’t had a losing streak of this length since 1982. In 1913, the first year the team competed as the Yankees and before the team relocated from the Polo Grounds to the original Yankee Stadium, New York went on an 11-game losing streak, the longest such streak in franchise history.
While the Nationals are seeking to make it eight wins in a row, they have won seven of their previous nine series. The Nationals have won 13 of their last 18 games thanks to a home run by CJ Abrams in the eighth inning on Tuesday. They are now 22-14 since the All-Star break. On Tuesday, the Washington Nationals signed manager Dave Martinez to a two-year contract deal and went 7-1 in one-run games this month.
For the Yankees, it’s Luis Severino, who at 2-8 and 7.98 ERA is having the worst season of his eight-year career. In eight appearances (seven starts), the right-hander is 1-6 with an 11.08 earned run average (ERA) since his six-inning performance against Texas in June. This includes a two-inning relief stint on August 9 in which he allowed four runs, a four-inning start on August 15, and four consecutive appearances in which he allowed at least five earned runs.
After his strongest start of the season, the Nationals will send out MacKenzie Gore. On Wednesday, the lefty allowed just one hit while striking out seven over six and a third innings, helping his team to a 6-2 victory over Boston. Gore has never faced the Yankees before. In seven career appearances (six starts), he has a 2.27 ERA against teams from different leagues.
