Analysis & Picks: Cardinals vs Pirates 8/22/2023

Game Preview

The Cardinals suffered a disappointing defeat again yesterday. An infield single and a wild pitch scored two early runs for the Pirates. In the third inning, Liover Peguero hit a bases-loaded single to score two additional runs. In the fifth inning, the Pirates extended their advantage to 8-0 on an RBI single by Connor Joe and a three-run homer by Joshua Palacios.

The Cardinals‘ solitary run of the game came in the fifth inning on a solo home run by Andrew Knizner, but they still went on to lose 11-1. The Pirates won, but they are also looking ahead. They were leading the division at the beginning of June, but now they’ve slipped well behind.

The Cardinals need to strengthen their rotation. They’ve dropped five of their last six games while allowing 46 runs. They have a team ERA of 23rd, a WHIP of 27th, and an opponent batting average of 29th. Today, Adam Wainwright will take the mound for the Cardinals. He has a record of 3-8 and an earned run average of 8.42.

Wainwright‘s last three starts have been terrible. He’s just thrown ten innings but has already allowed 18 runs (3 homers). The Cardinals have won only once in his last seven outings and he has allowed seven or more runs in three of those starts. If the Cardinals want to win today, Wainwright will need to pitch like he did back in his prime.

The Pirates’ offense has been hit or miss as of late, and yesterday night they hit a home run for 11 runs. They are 3 and 3 in their past six contests. They have scored a total of four runs in the three losses. They’ve scored 25 total runs in their three victories. They rank 23rd in runs scored, 26th in batting average, 21st in on-base percentage, and 25th in slugging.

Tonight’s Pirates starter Johan Oviedo hopes to contribute to the team’s success. Oviedo has a record of 6-13 and an earned run average of 4.55. This month’s performance is generally indicative of his entire season. His first two starts of the month combined for 14 scoreless innings. Nine innings each time in his following two outings, with ten runs allowed.
