With five victories in their previous six games, the Brewers are beginning to extend their lead in the NL Central. They will face their first significant challenge in over two weeks when they travel to Los Angeles to take on the Dodgers. Can the Brewers score runs despite the presence of young pitcher Bobby Miller, or will they be swept aside by the NL West heavyweights?
It’s only fair that baseball fans everywhere get pumped up about the Brewers. They boast one of the strongest pitching staffs in the league and have recently found offensive success, as seen by their 17-run weekend sweep of the White Sox in Chicago.
Despite their recent dominance against the lowly White Sox and Rockies, the Brewers are only 3.5 games ahead of the Cubs in the division. A series loss to the Nationals and a split with the Pirates preceded that.
On the other hand, Miller’s whiff rate is below average, at 36%, and he has generated swings and misses at just an 18% clip during his last two outings.
However, the right-hander had a groundball percentage of 43% or higher in his past three appearances, so that may be the idea all along. Miller has tried to pitch to contact a little better by increasing his use of his fastball and slider in response to a continuous reduction in groundballs.
Miller’s anticipated batting average has increased to.274 due to more hard-hit balls in August, which is not going according to plan. Pitching to contact is essential for young pitchers since increasing their strikeout rate takes time. Miller has managed to keep the ball on the ground, so they may not be softly hit.
Miller has struggled with hard contact at times during his debut season. Given their poor contact, the Brewers should assist him in balancing his newfound propensity for grounders with a lower anticipated hitting average. The Brewers will likely experience a rude awakening going up against a legitimately talented team.
