Tonight kicks off a three-game weekend series between the Chicago Cubs and the Arizona Diamondbacks, which might have major consequences for the NL Wild Card race. Arizona won three of four games in their most recent meeting with Chicago a week ago. The game will be played during the night at Chase Field in Phoenix. Cubs starter and lefty Justin Steele (16-3, 2.49 ERA) will face off against D-Backs righty Brandon Pfaadt (1-8, 6.25 ERA).
The recent loss of two of three games against Colorado did not help Chicago’s playoff hopes. The Cubs won the series opener, but they were swept after losing games two and three by scores of 6-4 and 7-3, respectively. The Cubs are currently 4.5 games behind Milwaukee in the NL Central but still hold the second NL Wild Card slot.
Steele made another strong case for NL Cy Young consideration in his team’s 3-2 loss to the Diamondbacks in extra innings last Saturday. He threw seven whole innings, allowing just one earned run on six strikeouts. Right-handed hitters have struggled mightily against him this year, with a .240 average and a.613 OPS.
Losing three of four to the Mets this week didn’t help Arizona’s postseason hopes, either. After winning the first game, the Diamondbacks went on to suffer consecutive losses by scores of 7-4, 7-1, and 11-1. The club is currently tied for the last NL Wild Card berth with San Francisco and Cincinnati.
Last Sunday’s game against the Cubs, which Pfaadt started, did not go well, as the club lost by a score of 5-2. He lasted the whole six frames, but he allowed four earned runs on seven hits and a walk. This year at Chase Field, he had a dismal 1-5 record, 7.30 ERA, and .325 opponent batting average.
