On Monday night, Adam Wainwright will face the visiting Milwaukee Brewers in the first game of a four-game series, and he’ll be going for win No. 200 of his career. Wainwright, at 42 years old, made his MLB debut with the Cardinals in 2005.
Wainwright won game 199 for the Cardinals on Tuesday against the Baltimore Orioles by a score of 5-2. Wainwright, who will be retiring after the season, gave up two runs in five innings. It was his first win since June 17 and halted an 11-game losing streak in which he had an ERA of 10.72.
In 54 career games, Wainwright is 21-14 with a 2.74 ERA against the Brewers. With a career record of 199-128, he will be looking to become the 122nd pitcher in big league history to win 200 games on Monday.
The Cardinals won their last game of the season on Sunday, 6-5 against the Phillies, but they still finished with a losing record (66-83) for the first time since 2007. Sunday’s winning run was scored by a rookie named Jordan Walker, who hit a single home run in the bottom of the eighth inning.
Milwaukee’s Freddy Peralta, a right-hander with a 12-8 record and a 3.79 ERA, will face off against Wainwright on Monday. Peralta pitched 6 1/3 innings, allowing one run on two hits, as the San Francisco Giants beat the Miami Marlins 3-1. In his previous nine starts, he is 6-0 with a 2.01 ERA and 82 strikeouts over 53 2/3 innings.
Milwaukee is currently in first place in the National League Central, with a 6 1/2 game lead over the Chicago Cubs. After a successful seven-game homestand, the Brewers are now on the road. The three-game winning streak came to an end on Sunday with a 2-1 loss to Washington.
