Game Preview
The Reds beat the Twins 7-3 yesterday. Noelvi Marte’s single and Will Benson’s sacrifice fly in the second inning gave the Reds a 2-0 lead. In the fourth, the Twins scored again when Royce Lewis went deep, but Benson answered with a two-run homer of his own. The Reds scored three unanswered runs in the seventh to create a 7-2 lead that would hold up.
Today, Fernando Cruz will take the mound for the Reds in the opening inning. Only on August 26 did he start a game this year. He just lasted 1.1 innings and gave up one run (although undeserved) in that game. He is 1-1 with a 4.05 ERA so far this season. The Reds are expected to use the bullpen in his place today after he goes out for a brief appearance.
Despite the setback, the Twins are still in first place in the AL Central by seven games over the Guardians. They need to win only five more games to secure first place in their division. It’s possible that this is Joey Votto’s final season with the Reds, therefore they’re trying their best to make the playoffs. Currently, the Reds and Cubs are locked in a virtual tie for the second and last Wild Card place in the National League.
Today, Kenta Maeda will take the mound for Philadelphia. He now has a 4.50 ERA and a record of 5-7. He has had a good month so far. He has made three starts, totaling 17.1 innings, and allowed seven runs during that time. A 3.63 ERA is a respectable mark. While he has done well as a pitcher, home runs have been a problem for him.
The game being played away from home is favorable for Kenta Maeda. This year, his home ERA is above six, but on the road, it’s only 3.31. He has also improved since the All-Star break, with a 4.14 ERA in that time. Cruz has just had two days off to prepare for this game. So, he’s going to take a quick trip. The Reds’ bullpen, however, has had plenty of rest and should perform well today.
