The Braves took an early lead as Ozzie Albies hit a home run in the bottom of the first, but the Phillies tied the game in the top of the second. After Johan Rojas blasted a two-run home run, the Phillies never trailed again. The Phillies would go on to win 7-1 thanks to home runs from Nick Castellanos, Kyle Schwarber, and JT Realmuto.
Even though the loss dropped the Braves’ record to 96-54, it was meaningless. The National League East Division title is already theirs. The Phillies’ current record is 82-68. That’s good enough for second place in the division and the National League’s best Wild Card position. The current odds for them to get that slot are 3.5. The Phillies need eight wins to clinch a playoff spot of their own.
Today, Christopher Sanchez will pitch for the Phillies. He has an ERA of 3.40 and a record of 2-4. His previous start against the Braves ended in defeat when he allowed four runs over 7.1 innings. Yet, he has recently gotten off to some promising starts. On September 8th he pitched five innings while allowing four hits and zero runs against the Marlins.
Today, Spencer Strider will take the mound for the Braves. This season, he has a 17-5 record and a 3.73 ERA. On the season, he ranks first in the majors in wins and strikeouts and is tenth in WHIP. His last start was a seven-inning no-hitter in which he allowed just one run and nine strikeouts. Nonetheless, that follows a string of poor outings for him. He had allowed ten runs in just 8.2 innings across his previous two games.
When Spencer Strider takes the mound for the Braves, they’re guaranteed to have an advantage in the pitching department. While he has been good this year, he has allowed four or more runs in three of his last eight starts. The Phillies are a squad with the potential to score that many runs. The Braves’ offensive struggles from the other night were not typical.
