The Padres look to extend their winning streak to six games on Tuesday against Colorado, which would exceed their previous season’s best winning streak. Blake Snell, a candidate for the National League Cy Young Award, will face off against Rockies right-hander Ryan Feltner in this game for San Diego.
The Padres are finally performing well in every facet of the game. Time is the one factor working against them. They need to catch up to four teams and make the NL wild card playoffs despite being 5 1/2 games down in the standings with 11 games remaining and a record of 73-78.
The Rockies (56-94) may make history by suffering through their first 100-loss season, but at least they aren’t headed there. Colorado is gaining steam toward the humiliating mark with an 11-26 record over the past 37 games.
With the recent injuries to Kyle Freeland (oblique) and Peter Lambert (biceps), the Rockies’ most pressing need right now is starting pitching.
On May 13, Feltner was hit on the right side of the head by a line drive off the bat of Nick Castellanos of the Philadelphia Phillies, resulting in a skull fracture. This will be Feltner’s first game since then.
On Tuesday, Feltner will be limited to about 80 pitches due to his 1.75 WHIP and opponents’.268 batting average off of him. This will be his first career start against the Padres, but he has faced them three times in his career, with a 0-0 record and a 3.68 ERA across 14 2/3 innings.
Snell, meanwhile, is in the midst of a historic stretch for the Padres. His ERA is outstanding, as his opponents are batting just.187 against him. Despite being fourth in the league in strikeouts (217), Snell is first in walks (93).
