After last week’s 42-14 loss to Maryland, the Virginia Cavaliers are 0-3 and off to the worst possible start to the season. Their old quarterback, Brennan Armstrong, is back in Charlottesville this Friday to lead the 2-1 North Carolina State Wolfpack, their first ACC opponent. The Wolfpack defeated VMI easily in Week 3; their lone loss came against No. 10 Notre Dame.
Brennan Armstrong is playing against his previous team for payback. He attended UVA for five years before transferring to NC State for the current campaign. For the time being, he is the Wolfpack’s only offensive option. Armstrong has completed 62.9 percent of his throws for 679 yards, scoring three touchdowns and throwing three interceptions. With 161 yards and three additional touchdowns on the run, he is also the team’s leading rusher.
Although the Cavaliers’ season hasn’t gone well thus far, they boast a formidable receiving duo in Washington and Malachi Fields. Malik Washington leads the club with 18 receptions, 289 yards, and a score. His longest reception went for 63 yards, and his average is 16.1.
This year, Virginia’s defense has been abysmal. The Woos are allowing 6.3 yards per play, which is 121st worst in the league. They let Maryland’s Taulia Tagovailoa throw for 342 yards on only 19 completions last week.
The Cavaliers are virtually as bad defensively as they are offensively. They average just 316.7 total yards per game, good for 115th, and average just 4.9 yards per play, good for 111th. Their running offense ranks 128th and they average just 1.9 yards per carry.
The secondary for NC State is usually one of their strongest defensive units, and so far this season they have allowed just 191.7 passing yards per game. They have already picked off the opposing team twice and allow just 14.3 completions per game, good for 15th in the league. The Hoos’ lack of a running game and NC State’s strong pass defense put the onus of winning the game squarely on Colandrea’s shoulders.
