The Marlins come into the game having been swept by the Rangers over the weekend. Losing four games in a row is a new low for them, and seven of their previous ten have ended in defeat. With a record of 58-55, the Marlins are now a half-game behind the Reds and the Cubs for the National League’s second Wild Card slot.
Miami’s offense has been terrible throughout the team’s last seven games, during which they’ve gone 6-2. They have scored just 24 runs in their last seven games. Nine were victories, and the other eight were losses, the worst of which being 9-8 to the Rangers. Only seven runs were scored in the other five games.
Over the past seven days, Jorge Soler has hit the most home homers. Soler has driven in five runs and scored four with the help of a double and two home homers. His on-base percentage is at.344, despite his.250 average, in the last seven days. Josh Bell, a newcomer, has hit a home run and driven in three runs.
Twenty-year-old Eury Perez, one of the top pitching prospects in baseball, will take the mound for the Marlins today. With a 2.36 earned run average, he is 5-3 on the year. Since July 6th, when he went six innings while allowing just one run, he has not started a game. The improvement from his previous start in July was encouraging.
The Reds, however, have dropped six straight matches. This past weekend, the Nationals swept the Reds. They just lost three of four to the Cubs, bringing their record down to 59-55 for the year. That’s 1.5 games behind the division-leading Brewers.
The Reds will be looking to solve their pitching problems today. The Reds’ pitching staff has allowed 60 runs during their current six-game losing streak. Only five runs were allowed in a game they lost to the Cubs. Today, the 3-2 Brandon Williamson that holds a 4.85 ERA will make the start for them.
