On Monday night, the Minnesota Twins will play the Detroit Tigers in Detroit. There have been seven games between the Twins and Tigers this season. With a 4-3 series advantage, Detroit will enter this four-game set full of confidence.
The Tigers’ success this year has surprised everyone. Even though they won’t make the postseason, the Tigers are now in third place in the AL Central. Over the weekend, the Tigers dropped two of three to the Tampa Bay Rays. We could say that the Tigers aren’t very strong in either offensive or defensive areas, but they do have some competent players.
Today’s starting pitcher for the Tigers, Joey Wentz, hasn’t fared well so far this year. However, in two starts against the Twins, he has been very effective. In his two starts, Wentz has gone 11 innings, allowing seven hits, five earned runs, and striking out thirteen batters.
Wentz had nine strikeouts in the opening game. The Twins are the league leaders in strikeouts despite their offensive struggles. If Wentz can continue to cause pitchers to chase pitches outside the zone, he should have another great start.
For the Twins, Pablo Lopez has been outstanding this year. His numbers are 4.01 ERA, 1.12 WHIP, and 11.0 K/9. Although his strikeout-to-walk ratio ranks seventh in the MLB, he ranks third in strikeouts. Lopez has been on a roll as of late as five of his previous six starts have ended with him allowing two runs or less.
Minnesota has built a sizable lead in the division and is now widely considered the favorite to win the AL Central. The Minnesota Twins have a 4.5-game lead over the Cleveland Guardians and they just had a fantastic weekend by sweeping the Arizona Diamondbacks.
The Twins’ road record is 26-30, so playing in Detroit is definitely not a plus. Since being promoted to the major leagues, Edouard Julien has been outstanding. His.299 batting average and.901 OPS are tops on the team.
When facing Lopez previously, Detroit had a 10-strikeout game. However, they managed to produce seven hits and three runs. The Tigers will be able to do something this game if they can cut down on their strikeouts and add a few more runs to their scoring total.
