White Sox rookie catcher Korey Lee made his debut in Thursday’s 8-5 loss to the A’s in the series opener. The White Sox acquired Lee from the Houston Astros at the trade deadline in exchange for reliever Kendall Graveman. Lee got his first hit with the team in the fifth inning, a single, and he’s excited to demonstrate what he can do in the remaining five weeks of the season.
The A’s are relieved to play a team they have already beaten this year. Between June 30 and July 2, Oakland swept the White Sox in three games. The long ball was the difference in Thursday’s victory over the White Sox for the Athletics, who have won three of their last four games. Zack Gelof, Brent Rooker, and Tony Kemp all went deep, and Shea Langeliers hit two home runs and drove in four runs.
In his last four games, Langeliers has gone 4-for-8 with four home runs. What factors have led to this increase in power? It’s difficult to tell.
On Friday, Dylan Cease of the White Sox will face off against Oakland’s Zach Neal, a right-handed pitcher. After a poor August in which he went 1-2 with a 6.75 ERA in four starts totaling 18 2/3 innings, Cease is hoping to turn things around in September.
On Sunday at Colorado, Cease allowed five runs on eight hits with two walks and six strikeouts, but he was not given the loss. He has a 2-0 record and a 2.70 ERA in four career starts against Oakland, with the lone loss coming on July 1 when he allowed three runs on six hits in five and a third innings of work.
After making seven relief appearances, five of which have come since the Athletics recalled him from Triple-A Las Vegas on August 3, Neal will make his first start of the season. In his only previous start against Chicago on August 21, 2016, he allowed four runs on eight hits and was subsequently defeated.
