The Nationals have beaten the Yankees three times out of four this week, so they should be confident heading into this game. They’ve been on a roll as of late. They’ve defeated the Yankees, Phillies, and Red Sox seven times in their last ten meetings.
Even though they are now 24 games out of first place in their division and 8 games out of a Wild Card spot, the Nationals’ current 59-69 record will easily surpass their preseason win total. The Nationals, however, have their sights set on more than just winning. As Stephen Strasburg prepares to retire from baseball, a party in his honor is being planned.
Today, Joan Adon will take the mound for the Nationals. This month marks the third time he’s started a game for the Nationals this season. He has thrown 13 innings in those starts, allowing 11 runs (including two homers). There is a 7.62 ERA there. The Nationals have won every game he has started this season, and he has a record of 1-0 in those contests.
The Nationals are on a roll, but the Marlins have been struggling as of late. This week they dropped two of three against the Padres, and they’ve dropped six of their previous ten. They are now 18 games off of first place in the NL East with a record of 65–63.
Their offense has stalled, and they’re now two games behind the Diamondbacks for the second and last Wild Card place. Seven runs is all they’ve managed to score over the course of the last five games. On the season, they rank 22nd in slugging % while ranking sixth in on-base percentage, sixth in batting average, and sixth in runs scored. Jorge Soler has a lot of power and runs batted in for the squad this season.
Today, Braxton Garrett will make his major league debut for the Marlins. With a 3.94 ERA, he is 7-4 on the season. He has been doing okay on the mound recently. He has gone five or six innings in each of his four starts this month.
