Game Preview

On Tuesday, the Philadelphia Phillies toasted their second straight postseason berth with a champagne-filled clubhouse. The Phillies secured a spot in the National League wild card game with their sixth consecutive victory, a 3-2 triumph in 10 innings over the visiting Pittsburgh Pirates.

On Wednesday, in the middle game of a three-game series, host Philadelphia will attempt to keep the momentum going as they take on Pittsburgh (74-83) at home. The game-winning play for the Phillies was made by an unlikeliest of heroes. The game-winning hit was a single to center field by rookie Johan Rojas, who started the year in Double-A Reading.

The Phillies are on a roll, helped along by Brandon Marsh’s solo home run. The Phillies reached the World Series last year, but were eliminated in six games by the Houston Astros. The Phillies’ season will continue with a new role as the National League’s top wild card. On October 3, 4, and (if necessary) 5, they will host home playoff games.

Ranger Suarez (4-6, 3.89) will start for the Phillies on Wednesday. On Thursday against the New York Mets, he started and went 6 2/3 innings, allowing 5 hits and 4 runs. Suarez has been brilliant versus the Pirates in his career, with a 2-0 record with 19 1/3 scoreless innings across five games (two starts).

Following a four-game winning streak, the Pirates will try to end a two-game losing streak. Henry Davis and Bryan Reynolds both hit a single home run for Pittsburgh in Tuesday’s 2-1 loss. Against five Philly pitchers, the Pirates mustered only five hits, walked once, and struck out a dozen times.

The Pirates’ season began brilliantly, as they won 20 of their first 28 games. As of the beginning of May, they held the best record in the NL. Despite this early success, they were unable to keep it going and ended up with another losing record this year, their fifth in a row.

On Wednesday, the Pirates will likely start Johan Oviedo (9-14, 4.12 ERA). In his most recent start, a win over the Chicago Cubs on Thursday, the right-hander went six innings while allowing just four hits and no runs.
