Merrill Kelly’s ability to maintain his dominant form on the mound is crucial to the Diamondbacks’ playoff hopes. The 34-year-old veteran’s stellar performance this year includes a 10-5 record, a 3.13 ERA, and a career-high 9.3 strikeouts per nine innings.
Kelly’s confidence has been bolstered over the past few months thanks to playing at Chase Field. The veteran right-hander has a 3-1 record and 2.74 ERA with 54 strikeouts in 49 1/3 innings across his previous eight home starts.
Meanwhile , the Reds’ chances of winning tonight depend on which Brandon Williamson takes the mound.
The previous 2019 second-round pick has been reasonably effective this season, posting a 4-3 record and 4.47 earned run average (ERA) across 17 appearances. However, in his most recent start, he allowed four earned runs on nine hits over 5 2/3 innings as the Toronto Blue Jays won 4-3.
Williamson’s previous two road starts have both ended in losses for the Reds, with the team being outscored 20-8 over that span. We’ll see if they play with more assurance tonight with him at the helm.
