Analysis & Predictions: Rangers vs Twins 8/24/2023

August 24, 2023

Game Preview

Now only one game separates the Rangers and the Houston Astros in the AL West. They’ve dropped their last six games in a row and seven of their last 10. Ahead of the Seattle Mariners, the Rangers have only a 1.5-game advantage.

The AL wild card race is as close as it gets, so a drop to the second wild card spot might be disastrous. Two straight losses to the Arizona Diamondbacks followed a weekend sweep by the Milwaukee Brewers for the Rangers. Now that they can play baseball safely, all that matters is that they play well.

Heaney’s time with the Rangers has been somewhat random. He will get off to a couple strong debuts, then struggle mightily in his next outing, and so on. But he’s great at keeping damage down. When he pitches away from home, his opponents’ batting average decreases to .229. His strikeout total is another metric to watch. Heaney’s K/9 is higher than 9.0. This will be crucial later on in the game.

The Twins have a six-game lead over the second-place Cleveland Guardians in the American League Central. Despite their lack of success of late (5-5 in their previous 10 games), they are in familiar ground at home. The Twins are 36-26 at Target Field this season, so they’ve been there for every home game.

With a six-game lead in the division, they have plenty of breathing room. However, if they start losing games, they might find themselves in a tight divisional race as the season winds down. However, only Minnesota has a run differential in the positive.

Lopez’s pitching performance at Minnesota has been reliable. He also won the August award for best pitcher. For the Twins, he has made four excellent starts this month. Lopez has a 0.36 ERA (one run allowed in 25 innings) thanks to his 19-hit shutout, 27-strikeout performance, and 3-walk total.
