Ivory Coast will open the Africa Cup of Nations by playing Guinea-Bissau in group A on January 13 at Stade Olympique Alassane Ouattara.
After victories in 1992 and 2015, Ivory Coast will be attempting to capture their 3rd Africa Cup of Nations championship. Additionally, it will be their first time hosting the competition since 1984. Ivory Coast, under the direction of head coach Jean-Louis Gasset, will field a star-studded roster that includes former Barcelona player Franck Kessie, midfielder Ibrahim Sangare of Nottingham Forest, and striker Sebastian Haller of Borussia Dortmund. Wilfried Zaha and Eric Bailly, two former Premier League players, were most noticeably left off of the final roster. However, Haller has had a difficult season, making just 11 appearances in the Bundesliga without scoring. Ivory Coast has won 3 of their previous 5 games and drawn 2, including a 9-0 victory against Seychelles in the World Cup qualifying round.
In their last 5 games, Guinea-Bissau has taken 2 and lost 2, demonstrating their erratic play. They lost badly to Mali 6-2 in a friendly encounter, and now they are about to begin their AFCON campaign with the hopes of getting a win. The Guinea-Bissau head coach, Baciro Cande, chose a 25-man team for the competition. Despite not being well-known, Franculino Dju, a forward for Midtjylland, has become a promising young player. In 14 league appearances for his club, the 19-year-old has now scored 6 goals and provided 2 assists. He also scored the game-winning goal for his nation versus Sierra Leone in the final AFCON qualifier. Guinea-Bissau produced 11 goals and gave up 5 goals in AFCON qualification, but they will have a difficult time getting past Ivory Coast goalkeeper Yahia Fofana, who has only allowed 3 goals in his previous five games. They will have to work very hard in this game if they want to get a win.
