Now that the Big East conference portion of the schedule has arrived, we have an enticing game on Wednesday evening between the Xavier Musketeers and the No. 4 UConn Huskies.
Xavier was defeated on their travels by Villanova in the previous match, which resulted in their second loss in three matches. The Musketeers are now 1-2 within the Big East this season and have plummeted to 7-7 overall. Xavier was behind Villanova by a margin of 8 points in the initial half and five points at the break. The second half saw the Musketeers behind by as much as ten points before mounting a comeback to cut the deficit. Late in the game, Xavier came within one point twice, but they were unable to seize the lead and ultimately lost. In the defeat, the Musketeers had a 41-38 advantage on the glass and shot 36.8% from the floor, including 5 of 18 from the 3-point line. In the defeat, Quincy Olivari paced Xavier via 14 points, 8 rebounds, and 3 steals.
In the last match on Friday evening, UConn defeated Butler away from home to win their third straight. The Huskies are now 13-2 overall and, with three other squads, share first place in the Big East after going 3-1 within conference play. UConn fell behind Butler by a margin of 8 points in the first half and by 7 points at the break. In the midst of the second half, the Huskies launched a 13-5 run to seize the lead. With 3:45 remaining, UConn’s lead was cut to one, but they recovered with an 8-2 run that sealed the victory. The Huskies led 33–24 in rebounds and shot 54.5% from the floor, hitting 10 of 26 from behind the arc. Scoring 20 points until fouling out in the win, Alex Karaban topped UConn.
