The Sacramento Kings and Utah Jazz square off in a Western Conference matchup on Wednesday evening as the NBA returns to action this week. The Kings finished 48–34 in the previous campaign, good enough to secure the third seed, but they were defeated by the Warriors in the opening round of the postseason. Despite having a 37-45 record and being the West’s No. 12 seed, Utah missed the playoffs last year.
After a 37-win campaign, the Jazz are starting their second season under head coach Will Hardy. Since 2015–16, the Jazz haven’t fallen short of the postseason in consecutive seasons. The youngish Jazz trio of Collin Sexton, Jordan Clarkson, and Lauri Markkanen is admirable, but John Collins’ arrival accelerates the rebuilding process. Keyonte George, a first-round selection and standout guard out of Baylor, was also added by the Jazz, and he is expected to play backup point guard.
Lauri Markkanen still has the opportunity to get better at the age of 26. The previous season, he was named the Most Improved Player and a member of the All-Star team. With 25.6 points per game, this versatile 7’0 forward placed 12th in the NBA’s scoring standings.
Other than the addition of Chris Duarte and JaVale McGee, the Kings are essentially the same squad as they were a season ago. The Kings are counting on De’Aaron Fox and Keegan Murray to develop as players and on Harrison Barnes and Domantas Sabonis to remain reliable. If he can maintain his form from the previous season, Malik Monk might win six-man of the year, while Kevin Huerter is still one of the league’s more underappreciated shooting guards.
Last season, De’Aaron Fox, a guard for Sacramento, was named to the Third Team All-NBA and became an All-Star. The 25-year-old point guard wants to advance his team past the opening round of the postseason and keep improving.
