The NBA’s inaugural full evening of competition will take place on Wednesday after the doubleheader that took place on Tuesday to kick off the 2023-24 season. The New Orleans Pelicans and Memphis Grizzlies‘ Western Conference battle is one of the evening’s most anticipated matchups.
Memphis had a 51-31 record, including 35-6 at home, and finished second in the Western Conference previous year. G Desmond Bane, who produced a career-best 21.5 points per game on average during the previous campaign, will be the Grizzlies’ leader. Under coach Taylor Jenkins, the Memphis Grizzlies are in their 5th season with him and managed to win 51 matches in the previous campaign. They have also qualified for the postseason the past three years. Marcus Smart and Derrick Rose joined the Grizzlies, and Dillon Brooks was let go. While Rose may be a nice, seasoned mentor to Ja Morant, who is going to be suspended for the initial 25 contests of the campaign, Smart provides the defense and tenacity that Brooks provided. Morant, Jaren Jackson Jr., and Desmond Bane make a strong enough trio to include them in the discussion of Western candidates. Missing Steven Adams for the season is painful, but adding Smart helps.
With a 42-40 record at the end of the campaign, New Orleans finished ninth in the West. It is anticipated that Zion Williamson will be fit to begin this campaign. Despite playing in only 29 games the previous season, he averaged 26 points per game. Last season, Brandon Ingram posted a career-high 24.7 points per game on average.
As the Pelicans begin their third campaign under head coach Willie Green, they have prevailed in 78 games in the previous two seasons. After losing Josh Richardson, Garrett Temple, Jaxson Hayes, and Willy Hernangomez, the Pelicans were unable to find many replacements. The Pelicans acquired Cody Zeller and selected Jordan Hawkins during the first round, but that was it. Making certain Zion Williamson is fit and healthy is the Pelicans’ first priority. If so, the Pelicans, with CJ McCollum, Brandon Ingram, and Jonas Valanciunas, are an actual threat in the West. The Pelicans may struggle with depth, but when Zion is healthy, they’ll have one of the strongest starting lineups in the NBA.
