The 2023–24 regular campaign between the Minnesota Timberwolves and Toronto Raptors will open with a cross-conference matchup between two strong clubs hoping to advance to the postseason. The Raptors were knocked out from the play-in competition as the ninth seed, while the Timberwolves are returning off of a first-round elimination in 2022–2023. Last season, these two teams split their season series.
The Raptors finished the previous season having posted a 41-41 record, the ninth seed within the Western Conference, and a play-in game loss to the Chicago Bulls. It was a disappointing season. They are hoping that F Scottie Barnes, the 4th overall pick during the 2021 NBA Draft, can advance further to assist F Pascal Siakam, who led the club with 24.2 points per game, in the absence of any outstanding offseason signings.
Forward Siakam, who has improved his scoring average in every one of the past 3 seasons, is the focal point of the Raptors’ offensive attack. In 2022–2023 he also averaged 5.8 assists and 7.8 rebounds. If Schroder can establish a good chemistry with the returning players, Toronto might push for a top-six Eastern Conference position for the upcoming campaign.
The Timberwolves finished the previous campaign at 42-40. The Denver Nuggets, winners of the NBA Championship, defeated Minnesota in five games. Anthony Edwards and Karl-Anthony Towns, the former first-round picks of the Timberwolves, will once again serve as the team’s leaders.
After appearing in just 29 regular-season matches the previous year, Karl-Anthony Towns has served as the face of the Timberwolves for a while and appears to be in good health to begin 2023. Should Minnesota shock in the Western Conference, he wants to surpass his current average of 23 points and 11.2 rebounds per game. Following his trade from Utah to Minnesota the previous season, Rudy Gobert averaged 13.6 points per game and 11.6 rebounds per game.
