The Miami Heat will begin their 2023–24 season versus the Detroit Pistons on Wednesday evening, looking to embark on their 2nd trip towards the NBA Finals in the previous 4 years. Miami was defeated by Denver in the NBA Finals of 2023, falling against the Nuggets in 5 games. Detroit concluded the season with the league’s worst record, finishing 17-65. Monty Williams, a first-year coach, is leading the Pistons after Dwane Casey left to take a front-office position.
The Miami Heat surprised everyone by winning the Eastern Conference and the NBA Finals, when they faced off against the Denver Nuggets, and by storming through the postseason the previous season. To make it all the way towards the finals, they received great performances from veterans Jimmy Butler and Bam Adebayo in addition to terrific contributions from supporting cast members Caleb Martin, Max Strus, and Gabe Vincent.
Although the Heat lost two rotational players to free agency, nearly every important member of the Eastern Conference championship squad from the previous season is back. In the initial round of the draft for the current season, they selected Jaime Jaquez Jr, the 2022–23 Pac-12 Player of the Year, who is anticipated to contribute right away. Jaquez Jr is 22 years old.
With a season hampered by injuries last year, the Detroit Pistons hope to improve on their dismal 17 victory total going into 2023–24. The Pistons concluded with 65 defeats, the second-worst record in the history of the franchise, after losing standout guard and former first overall choice Cade Cunningham due to injury early in the season. In addition to fellow guard Jaden Ivey, Cunningham will serve as the team’s leader. The pair should provide the Pistons with two players who can both create plays and score, as well as an offensively potent backcourt.
Despite missing out on the first pick, the Pistons were able to get 20-year-old forward Ausar Thompson with the 5th selection in the draft. Thompson should provide even more athleticism to a youthful, athletic club because he is skilled on both sides of the court.
