Game Preview

 

After a busy summer of roster changes, speculation, and building excitement for the new campaign, the Cleveland Cavaliers are returning to play. Cleveland’s 2023–24 NBA season begins on the road facing the Brooklyn Nets on October 25th at Barclays Center. During the 2022–2023 campaign, Brooklyn went 45–37 overall, 29–22 in the Eastern Conference, and 23–18 at home. In 2022–2023 Cleveland completed 51–31 overall and 34–18 in Eastern Conference play.

 

The previous campaign, the Nets scored 113.4 points per contest on average. Late in the season, Brooklyn added several important players, one of whom was forward Mikal Bridges. Bridges is an explosive scorer, and over his 27 games for the Nets this past season, he posted 26.1 points per contest on average. Ben Simmons is anticipated to play a significant role for Brooklyn this coming season as well. In his professional career, the former first-round pick has averaged 14.7 points, 7.8 rebounds, and 7.5 assists.

 

 

In previous seasons, the Nets attempted to form a “Big 3,” but it turned out to be more of a huge disaster. James Harden, Kyrie Irving, and Kevin Durant have all moved on. Spencer Dinwiddie is joined in the borough by more defensively-minded and team-oriented individuals including Dorian Finney-Smith, and Cam Johnson. It may lack the attention-grabbing titles and massive fan bases, but it also carries a lot less burden.

 

The previous season, the Cavaliers finished 51-31, compiling a winning record. After recording his best-ever campaign as an NBA player, guard Donovan Mitchell averaged 28.3 points, 4.4 assists, as well as 4.2 rebounds per game. During the previous season, he made 48.4% of his field goals including 38.6% of his 3-pointers.

 

In the offseason, the Cavaliers strengthened their roster by signing G Caris LeVert again and acquiring SF Max Strus from Miami through a sign-and-trade deal to improve at the three spot. Second-round selection and rookie SF Emoni Bates, may also surprise.
