Game Preview

If Luka Doncic and Devin Booker manage to stay healthy, the Western Conference Semifinals between the Dallas Mavericks and the Phoenix Suns are going to be a treat.

Doncic missed the first three games of the first-round series against the Utah Jazz. Even so, the Mavericks won 4-2. On the other hand, Phoenix was missing Booker for three of the six contests against the New Orleans Pelicans. Even so, the top seeded Suns also won 4-2.

With Doncic out, Jalen Brunson took a step forward and never looked back. He’s averaging 27.8 points per game, fourth best in the league during the Playoffs. As for the Suns, veteran Chris Paul has been leading the way. He’s averaging 11.3 assists per game and shot 14-for-14 in Game 6 against the Pelicans.

Game 1 is scheduled for Monday night at Footprint Center, where the Suns own a 34-10 record. As expected, Phoenix comes in as the NBA betting favorite, this time by 5½ points. Curiously enough, Phoenix is 1-7 against the spread in its last eight games played on a Monday.

The thing is that besides Booker and Paul, Mikal Bridges has been huge for the Suns. He was among the finalists for Defensive Player of the Year and is expected to guard Doncic like a ferocious dog.

“It’s really tough against him. He’s different. He’s amazing, really impresses me. But then on the offensive end, he improved so much that it’s really an amazing player he has become. It’s a big challenge going against him,” Doncic said.

Good news for both teams because the injury reports have no new additions. Dario Saric remains out for the Suns, while Tim Hardaway Jr. remains out for the Mavericks.

Regarding the regular season series, these two met three times. The Suns won them all, with two wins coming by eight points and the third by seven. However, keep in mind that Doncic missed the two games in Phoenix with a sprained left knee and ankle.
