Picks & Analysis: Phoenix Suns vs Golden State Warriors 10-24-2023

October 24, 2023

Game Preview

The 2023–24 NBA regular campaign gets underway on Tuesday, October 24th at Chase Center in San Francisco between the Phoenix Suns and Golden State Warriors. Phoenix had a 45–37 record and finished 4th among the Western Conference rankings during the 2022–23 campaign. With a six-game defeat against the Nuggets during the Western Conference playoffs, their campaign was over. Golden State finished the previous campaign 44-38 and in 6th place in the Western Conference. During the Western Conference playoffs, they were defeated by the Lakers in 6 matches.

In the off-season, the Suns acquired three-time All-Star guard Bradley Beal, who teams up with guards Devin Booker and Kevin Durant to form perhaps the NBA’s best “Big 3”. Frank Vogel, an NBA champion who won a title with the Los Angeles Lakers while they were on the verge of the playoffs in 2020, took over for Coach Monty Williams.

Phoenix’s campaign last year was unpredictable as a result of injuries and inconsistent play. The Suns lost to the Nuggets in 6 games after defeating the Clippers in 5 matches in the first round of the postseason. The Suns ended 2nd among the Pacific Division, 3 matches below the Kings. Devin Booker is suffering from a sore toe while Bradley Beal suffers a back issue, but both players are questionable for the Suns and are considered day-to-day. These issues could play a significant role if these players can’t feature in this game.

The Warriors spent their offseason busy repurposing or replenishing the roster. G Jordan Poole is replaced by veteran Chris Paul, who transfers from the Suns through the Washington Wizards, while F Dario Saric arrives as a brand-new player.

Due to injuries to several of its key players from the previous campaign, Golden State finished 6th in the Western Conference and matched for 3rd among the Pacific Division standings. In the first round of the postseason, the Warriors defeated the Kings in 7 matches before losing to the Lakers during the conference finals in 6 games.

Draymond Green’s ankle injury will prevent him from playing in Tuesday’s season-opening game.
