On Monday, the Arkansas State Red Wolves (2-6) take on the 20th-ranked Alabama Crimson Tide (5-2) at Coleman Coliseum.
The Alabama Crimson Tide were the top team in the country for a significant chunk of the previous season. They had a great season and were the number one seed for the NCAA Tournament, but San Diego State eliminated them early in the Sweet 16. The Tide intends to complete some tasks this season, especially in relation to the NCAA Tournament, despite a few personnel changes. They will take against the Arkansas State Red Wolves on Monday evening with a record of 5-2. The two power-five conference schools that Alabama has lost to thus far are Ohio State and Clemson. They lost to Clemson 85-77 at home on Tuesday evening in the ACC/SEC Challenge. By a game-high 23 points, Mark Sears spearheaded the way. Fellow seniors Aaron Estrada (16 points) and Grant Nelson (14 points) completed the ‘Bama double-digit scorers. Alabama was only down by one in the first half, but the Tigers’ season-high 52 points during the second half proved to be the undoing of Alabama. Overall, Clemson shot 53% from the field.
After finishing 13–20 in their previous campaign, the Arkansas State Red Wolves are once more struggling to be taken seriously, having started the season slowly with a 2–6 record. The Red Wolves have lost a pair of consecutive matches and 4 of their previous 5 contests going into their meeting with nationally ranked Alabama. The Red Wolves were defeated 77-66 by in-state foe, Arkansas Little Rock on Friday night while playing on the road. The Wolves led by 4 points at the half, but a dramatic 20-0 Little Rock surge during the second half decided the game. Little Rock shot 46% from the floor while the Wolves only managed to shoot 36%. Posting a career-high 20 points and 7 boards off the bench, Dyondre Dominguez paced A-State. Along with 5 rebounds and a career-best 16 points in the defeat, Derrian Ford additionally experienced a fantastic evening.
