Game Preview
On Monday, Jenny Craig Pavilion will host an NCAA basketball game between the Navy Midshipmen and the San Diego Toreros. As of right now, Navy is 0-3 for the year. The Midshipmen’s previous game concluded in a loss to UC San Diego. San Diego, on the other hand, is up 3-1 after defeating Le Moyne on Friday.
In their first game, the Toreros struggled a bit too much against Sonoma State, but they managed to overcome that and win 68-64. After defeating Jackson State 87-61 in game 2, San Diego lost to UC San Diego 69-63 in game 3. In that game, the Toreros gave up 17 turnovers and were outrebounded 32–31. In their most recent game against Le Moyne, San Diego managed to return to the winning side. After taking a 9-point advantage into halftime, the Toreros won 80-71. Kevin Patton scored 14 points and pulled down 9 boards, while Deuce Turner paced the squad with 19 points from the bench. The San Diego defense appears to be playing effectively so far this year; with 66.2 points surrendered per game, they rank 66th in the nation.
Navy isn’t scoring effectively and hasn’t had much luck in the victory column thus far. In their first game, the Midshipmen fell to Campbell 59-48, shooting only 33.9% from the floor and 18.2% (4 of 22) from three-point range. In game two against Temple, Navy performed marginally better but still fell short, 75-68. The Midshipmen faced UC San Diego on Saturday, and they got their hands busy once more. Navy lost 73-55, falling under 31-25 at the half and never catching up. Mitch Fisher led the club in scoring with 13 points as well as 3 rebounds. A pair of rebounds and 11 points were contributed by Austin Benigni. With 69.0 points allowed per match, the Midshipmen’s defense is currently ranked 86th in the nation.
