In an interesting matchup, the No.10 Tennessee Volunteers (4-2) will take on the No. 17 North Carolina Tar Heels (5-1) on Wednesday.
After an unsatisfactory 20-13 season, North Carolina entered this season. They welcomed back several transfers in addition to veteran players Armando Bacot and R.J. Davis, but they lost 2 starters in Caleb Love (Arizona). At home against Radford, Lehigh, and UC Irvine, the Tar Heels managed to secure victories in their initial three matches with relative ease. They flew to participate in the Battle 4 Atlantis on November 22 and won 2-1 in Northern Iowa and Arkansas. Villanova, the eventual tournament winners, was the object of their lone defeat. An ankle injury forced Cormac Ryan, a transfer from Notre Dame, to leave the match versus Villanova late in the second half, and he was unable to play against Arkansas. For this game, his status is classified as doubtful. Prior to the injury, Ryan, who had average 12.3 points per game for the Irish the previous season, had 18 points versus Villanova. Despite his average of 10.8 points, he is having trouble from the floor with a 35.6% field goal percentage.
Despite finishing 1-2 during the Maui Invitational, Tennessee only dropped three points at the AP Top 25 poll. That is owing to the fact that they were defeated by the top-ranked teams at the time, Kansas and Purdue. Great teams filled the Maui Invitational, and the Vols started the tournament with a 73-56 victory over Syracuse. However, they fell 71-67 at Purdue the next day, November 21. The Vols shot only 33% from the floor versus Purdue and 32% the next day (losing 69–60) against Kansas. Scoring 21 points on 8 of 15 shots (5 of 10 three-pointers), Santiago Vescovi spearheaded the way, while the other players on the team only made 14 of 53 shots overall.
