At Mackey Arena on Monday, the Purdue Boilermakers and Xavier Musketeers will square off.
3rd Purdue defeated Samford and Morehead State during the initial two matches of the season to start the year 2-0. The Boilermakers are fresh off of an ugly NCAA Tournament defeat to Fairleigh Dickinson, ranked #16, the year before. Purdue wants to recover this season and make it to the national championship game. Preseason All-American Zach Edey leads them; he has had a tremendous influence throughout his career and has been dominant from the beginning of the season. On Friday, Nov. 10, Purdue crushed Morehead State 87-57 in their most recent game. In the victory, the Boilermakers shot 55% from the floor and 35% from beyond the 3-point arc on average. The Eagles never took the lead, and Purdue maintained it the whole way. With 18 points from 5-of-8 shooting, Edey led the squad. Jones also contributed 15 points from 6 of 10 shots. From behind the arc, he made three of six.
Xavier has had an immediate start to the campaign. After winning the initial two games against Robert Morris and Jacksonville, the Musketeers have a 2-0 record. Among the 11 schools from the Big East, Xavier was placed sixth in the preseason poll. Zach Freemantle of Xavier was included on the preseason honorable mention All-Big East roster. Freemantle was a vital member of the Musketeers’ starting lineup during the first part of the previous campaign, but an injury that ended the season prevented him from playing in the Musketeers’ Sweet 16 run. The Musketeers beat Jacksonville 79-56 on Friday, November 10th, in their most recent game. With a 40% shooting percentage from the floor and a 24% 3-point shooting percentage, Xavier controlled the match for the most part. The Dolphins were only able to shoot 35% from the floor and 20% from beyond the 3-point arc due to Xavier’s formidable defense. In the defeat, the Dolphins also failed to manage the ball 17 times. In the victory for Xavier, Olivari produced a team-high 17 points from 3-for-9 shooting as well as 9-for-10 on attempts at the free-throw line.
