On Monday afternoon, the No. 2 Purdue Boilermakers and the No. 11 Gonzaga Bulldogs square off in the Maui Invitational quarterfinals. Purdue is coming off a Monday evening victory over Xavier at home, which they won 83–71. On Tuesday evening, Gonzaga easily defeated Eastern Oregon, winning 123-57. Purdue has defeated each of the three of the programs’ previous encounters in the all-time series, with their most recent match taking place on November 25th, 2022, in Portland during the Phil Knight Legacy Tournament semifinals, where the team triumphed 84–66.
Gonzaga has only played on the court twice thus far, but both occasions have produced excellent outcomes. During the second half of their opening game against Yale, the Bulldogs outscored the Crimson Tide 39–29, winning 86–71. In that game, Gonzaga outrebounded Yale 42–28 and shot 50% from the field. The last time Gonzaga played was last Tuesday against Eastern Oregon. The Bulldogs won 123-57, blowing out the opposition with 63 points scored in the initial half and another 60 points after that. Braden Huff contributed 23 points and 6 assists, and Graham Ike doubled up with 25 points alongside 11 rebounds. 6 rebounds and 20 points were scored by Anton Watson.
After three games, the Boilermakers haven’t faced too much resistance. In their opening game of the season, Purdue easily defeated Samford 98-45, shooting 54.8% from the floor and 55.2% (16 of 29) coming from 3-point range. In the second game, the Boilermakers defeated Morehead State 87-57, shooting 54.5% from the floor in the decisive victory. In their most recent game, Purdue faced Xavier, which proved to be their closest encounter of the year so far. The Boilermakers won 83-71 after scoring 46 points during the second half. Zach Edey led the squad with 28 points as well as 11 rebounds. In addition, Braden Smith contributed 12 points, 7 assists, and 5 rebounds.
